As the Marysville School District continues to prioritize financial recovery and align the budget more closely with our community’s values, there’s been a consistent message from the Marysville and Tulalip families we serve: Sports matter.

We hear you – and we agree.

That’s why, effective Fall 2026, the Marysville School District is bringing back sports at Cedarcrest and Totem Middle Schools. (Students enrolled at 10th Street will participate in sports at the boundary school associated with their home address.)

Why now?

Challenges the district has faced in recent years have led to many difficult decisions and sacrifices across our community. The district is still operating under binding conditions, and work continues to restore our financial standing and budget health.

That said, the district is making notable progress on its path to financial recovery in partnership with our community, and district leaders have determined that more athletics opportunities can – and should – return to our middle schools.

Ultimately, this change would not be possible without direct philanthropic funding from Foundry 10, an educational support organization that covers the costs of replenishing key equipment, as well as ongoing support from our community through local levy funding.

To our community: thank you for your ongoing commitment to providing students with important opportunities in MSD.

So what does this mean?

The Marysville School District’s vision for middle school sports is to teach student athletes of the next generation sportsmanship and provide foundational opportunities for students to explore and participate in the world of sports.

To that end, today’s announcement means that, starting next school year, the following sports will once again be offered at Cedarcrest and Totem Middle Schools (in addition to cross country and track & field):

  • Football

  • Basketball

  • Volleyball

  • Fastpitch

  • Co-Ed Wrestling

Student athletes enrolled at 10th Street will play sports at the “boundary” school associated with their home address. (For example, if Cedarcrest Middle is the school a student would attend if they hadn’t enrolled in 10th Street, they will play sports at Cedarcrest.)

Middle school families will not pay any fees to participate in MSD’s middle school sports for the 2026-2027 school year. (However, the district will continue using a pay-to-play system at the high school level.)
