COVID-19 Update, March 17, 2020

We are continuing to adapt to the changes occurring on a daily basis related to COVID-19 in the region and state.

OSPI identified five, ordered priorities to guide our work for the immediate future:

  1. Food service for children

  2. Employee compensation (people continue to be paid)

  3. Providing childcare for families of healthcare workers and first responders

  4. Graduation requirements

  5. Enrichment learning

Food services began for children yesterday. We have served over 1,200 meals in the last two days and expect this to keep growing. Delivery locations will be announced Friday.

Employees of the Marysville School District will continue to be paid during this closure. The Governor has continued to signal that funding will come to the district to mitigate impact on the economy.

We have partnered with the Marysville Boys and Girls Club and YMCA to provide no cost childcare to healthcare workers and first responders who need it during this school closure for elementary-age children. If this applies to you, contact the Boys and Girls Club or YMCA directly. The District is providing locations and staffing when the need arises, but the childcare will be run through the community organizations.

We are committed to helping our seniors graduate on time. The state has signaled they are preparing guidance on what this will look like, which we will share when the guidance is provided. We expect less local control and more state guidance on this.

And finally, we are working on learning enrichment activities. We are not attempting to hold school online at this time. This is directly in response to guidance from the state. We cannot equitably ensure every child has access to a free appropriate public education in an online setting. We will be providing resources for families to use as well as learning enrichment activities in the coming weeks. Those will be shared as they are developed.

Take care of each other and yourselves. We continue to be in this together, and together we will overcome the hardships.

Sincerely,

Jason Thompson  Superintendent
