COVID-19, Update, March 16, 2020

The state and regional responses to the COVID-19 global epidemic continue to escalate. The Governor released new directives today closing restaurants, entertainment facilities, hair and nail salons, and other recreational facilities. Child and daycare facilities remain open at this time. 

Additionally, the Governor was very direct in his communication around escalating social distancing strategies. The school district is following those directives and making work from home options available for non-essential personnel when possible and closing our facilities. We do have staff who will be checking messages and returning calls.

We began food service for any child from the ages of 1-18 in all of our K - 12 schools today and served over 500 lunches and breakfasts to children. We will be transitioning this service in the next several days to grab and go as well as exploration of a delivery schedule using existing bus routes as a guide. 

We are also working with local childcare agencies, namely the Boys and Girls Clubs and YMCA, and our schools to provide childcare for our community healthcare workers and first responders. And finally, we are continuing to explore how we can provide some form of learning enrichment activities during this extended closure. What those are and how they will be delivered is still being worked out, and we do not anticipate new information until early next week. This includes exploring how we might provide additional computing devices to students as well as internet access to families who need it, should those opportunities depend on connectivity. 

Special education, highly capable, learning assistance and Title 1 services cannot be provided during the school closure, although learning enrichment activities will be provided to all students. During the closure we will plan for fully implementing students’ IEPs and 504 plans upon return to school. 

We appreciate all of the offers of support and encouragement as well as patience as we navigate through the many details of our plans. This is an uncertain time, but we can and we will make it through this together.
